Community woodwork classes are run periodically. These typically have been at the Illawarra Woodwork School. Custom classes can emerge on demand. Currently Alaia making and “toolbox for life” are two workshops. Woodturning is on personal request or via gift voucher.
Alaia Workshop. Hand crafted modern replica of ancient Alaia surfboards. Sustainable harvested Paulownia is used. This is a fast growing Chinese species now harvested in north NSW and Qld. It is extremely lightweight and buoyant but strong enough to not need fibreglassing. Riding an Alaia is to experience frictionless surfing as the flat bottom and fins free give maximum speed. Definitely a challenge though, and at the end of the day, they go great on your lounge room wall as a piece of art!
Alaia making workshop will be coming in 2024 at Illawarra Woodwork School York Rd. Wonoona. Parent/Child combo welcome or couples. $500 covers all costs and you end up with an item worth that alone. Paipo bodyboard is another option. Future classes to come.

“Toolbox for Life” is a father figure and boy initiation day shared over assembling a typical first year carpenter apprentice toolbox. More importantly, there will be a community of men sharing in this and each man is to gift his boy with his first tool and draw an analogy of how this is a tool for life. This unique experience is best suited for boys 13-17. Workshops 2024 to be announced
